Iowa schools won't be allowed to start before the fourth Monday in August under legislation which has passed the state House. Supporters said the state needs to have uniformity in the start date of schools, while opponents argued the state was taking away local control. Governor Terry Branstad has also called for a law setting a start date for schools, and the Iowa Senate has previously supported holding off the start of the academic year until around the start of September. The bill that passed the House yesterday is now headed to the Senate.
