Milton F. Gerber, 94, of Hooppole, passed away Monday, July 16, 2012, with his wife by his side, at the Kewanee Care Home. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held 11:00 am on Thursday, July 19 at Calvary Evangelical Congregational Church, Hooppole. Rev. David T. Bailey and Rev. Dennis Bus will officiate. Burial will be in the Hooppole Cemetery. Visitation for Milton will be from 9:30 – 11:00 am Thursday prior to services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Milton Gerber Memorial Fund. Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Atkinson is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Milton was born to Frank and Laura Gerber on a farm near Hooppole, on February 18, 1918, the oldest of five children. He was united in marriage to Ferne Wolf on March 27, 1941 in Clinton, IA. Mr. Gerber farmed in the Hooppole area for 64 years retiring in 2005 at the age of 87. He was an active member of Calvary Evangelical Congregational Church serving over 40 years as Sunday school superintendent, also Sunday school teacher and church trustee. He was a member of Farm Bureau for over 50 years. He was an avid reader and read through the Bible many times.
Survivors include his wife Ferne, three sons Edwin (Kay) Gerber, Gary (Laura) Gerber, all of Hooppole, and Merle (Marcia) Gerber of Moline; ten grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Also, a sister Carolyn Marquis, of Sycamore a brother Lauren (Mary) Gerber of Princeton and a sister-in-law Betty Gerber of Garland, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Joyce Gerber, a brother Lowell Gerber and a great grandson Alexander Gerber.
