Opening weekend at Wrigley Field was about what we Chicago Cubs fans expected. The Cubs struggled to a 1 and 2 start and showed why this will be a year of transition and looking to the future. That said, there were many positive things to take away from the first series of 2012 season. The Cubs starting pitching was fantastic and the aggressiveness of the base paths was exciting.
Ryan Dempster
Ryan Dempster was nearly untouchable on Opening Day against theWashington Nationals. The Cubs ace threw 7 and 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out 10 in what looked like it would be an opening day victory. The bullpen, especially Kerry Wood, let Dempster down in the end but everything leading up to the bullpen disaster was unexpected and exciting. No one expects Dempster to be as good as he was on opening day everyday but the opening day performance does provide hope that Dempster could be the anchor this rotation needs.
